David “Smitty” Eugene Smith

David “Smitty” Eugene Smith, 84, of Butler passed away Monday at his home.

He was born Dec. 12, 1932, in Buffalo, N.Y., to the late Theodore Mitchelle Smith and Grace Byers Smith.

David worked for the VA Hospital as a nursing assistant until his retirement in 1987. He then drove cars for Baglier Buick. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. David was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 249 and the American Legion Post 117. He loved driving cars for Baglier Buick, loved to socialize and talk at flea markets and meet new people, and he always had a great joke. David had his very own version of “Twas the Night before Christmas” and always said he would arm wrestle anybody for a nickel.

He is survived by his wife, Ida “Peg” K. Kamerer Smith, who he married March 1, 1958; four daughters, Kimberly Smith of Butler, Sherry Clever and her husband, Henry, of Renfrew, Sheila Sutton and her husband, Norman, of Parker, and Debora Byers and her husband, Timothy, of Fenelton; nine grandchildren, Nicole Hustack and her husband, Chad, Shawnee Young and her husband, Patrick, Kari Allen and her husband, Jason, Kelly Thompson and her husband, Travis, Christopher Otto, Norman Sutton and his wife, Hollie, Krystal Otto, Megan Cassioli and her husband, Thomas, and Kaitlyn Byers; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Carla Kay Smith Toy, and her husband, Donald, of Kittanning; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter, Ava Young; and his stepbrother, Teddy Green.

SMITH — Friends of David “Smitty” Eugene Smith, who died Monday, Jan. 30, 2017, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Donald Toy, pastor of Montgomery Hill Baptist Church in Kittanning, David's brother-in-law, officiating.Private burial will take place at the Greenlawn Burial Estates.Officers and members of the American Legion Post 117 Butler, the American Legion Post 778 Lyndora and the VFW Post 249 will conduct military honors at the funeral home following the service.Online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
