Teen killed in courtyard shootingPITTSBURGH — Authorities are investigating the shooting death of a teenager.Police responded shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday to a courtyard in the Northview Heights neighborhood and found the victim.The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office identified him as 16-year-old Derrick Brown of Arnold and said he died of a gunshot wound to the head. His death was ruled a homicide.
Pressure problem cuts gas serviceCLAIRTON — Crews have been working to restore natural gas service to about 1,200 customers in a poorer Pittsburgh suburb.Columbia Gas cut off service to those customers in Clairton on Monday because of a drop in gas pressure in its lines.The Clairton City School District canceled classes today.Technicians were going door to door to perform safety checks. The cause of the low pressure was not immediately reported.
Break in rail snarls travelPITTSBURGH — Commuters faced delays of up to 20 minutes today while workers made emergency repairs to a small fracture in the rail inside the Mt. Washington transit tunnel.Outbound light rail vehicles and inbound buses were being detoured over Arlington Avenue. Outbound buses were also being detoured. A rail shuttle was operating between Station Square and First Avenue Station. Repairs were expected to be completed by this afternoon.
