Stun gun threat to man alleged

A six-time felon awaiting trial on two other felony cases is facing yet another felony charge following his arrest last week for threatening a man with a stun gun in Butler.

Donald E. Vargo, 42, who has no known address, is accused of pulling out the pink stun gun around 4 p.m. Thursday at Center Avenue and Spring Street during an alleged drug deal gone bad, city police said.

The intended victim, a 47-year-old Lyndora man, managed to grab the device away from the defendant and yell for help, according to court documents.

A deputy sheriff happened to be nearby on Center Avenue and heard the cries for help. The deputy, who was dressed in his uniform, yelled for Vargo to stop.

But the suspect got into a Chrysler PT Cruiser and fled on Spring Street, said Butler police Sgt. Ben Spangler.

Police would later learn that the vehicle was previously reported stolen from Allegheny County, Spangler said.

City officers checked the area but could not find the vehicle. The victim turned over the stun gun to police.

Later that night, police tracked down Vargo at a home on Morton Avenue. Officers arrested him there about 9:20 p.m. without incident.

The defendant was arraigned on a felony charge of possession of an incapacitation device with intent to use it on another person for an unlawful purpose.

He also faces misdemeanor charges of illegal possession of an incapacitation device and fleeing or attempting to elude police.

He is being held in Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 13.

Investigators, meanwhile, discovered that the 2008 PT Cruiser in which Vargo made his getaway that afternoon was reported stolen Dec. 8 from Robinson Township.

He is suspected of borrowing the vehicle from an acquaintance but failing to return it, according to Robinson Township.

The vehicle owner said she also loaned a credit card to Vargo. He is accused of absconding with the card, which he allegedly used to make 29 unauthorized transactions worth a combined $1,200.

Police said in most of the cases he used the victim’s credit card to buy fast food and gas and items at convenience stores.

Robinson Township police said they plan to charge Vargo with felony theft as well as receiving stolen property, identity theft and access device fraud.

The defendant already has a lengthy criminal record. He has felony convictions in five separate cases in Butler County between 2000 and 2001. The convictions are for trespass, theft and forgery.

He has another felony conviction in a 2012 trespass case in Beaver County.

Vargo has two more felony cases — drug possession and trespass — pending in Butler County court.

Since 2000, authorities said, he’s been in the Butler County Prison 16 different times for a combined 1,087 days.
