Moniteau holds orientationThe Moniteau School District will host parents and guardians of incoming kindergarten students for a kindergarten orientation at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 22 at Dassa McKinney Elementary School, 391 Hooker Road.School leaders and staff will share important dates and registration information and provide school packets and forms.Children are eligible for kindergarten for the 2017-18 school year if they are 5 years old on, or before, Aug. 15.Children and a parent or guardian must attend registration which will be March 1 and 2. 1,000 Books project unveiledRIMERSBURG — The Oil Creek District Libraries, including Eccles-Lesher Library in Rimersburg, 673 Main St., will launch a new program: 1,000 Books before Kindergarten.The program is a way to close the vocabulary gap and develop the early literacy skills needed for school success.Reading one book a day with a child for three years will exceed the goal of 1,000 books. Those reading two books a day will complete the program in 16 months.The library has resources to track reading progress. Apps also are available. After each 100 books, children will be eligible for stickers or bookmarks.Stop by the library to register.

Library plans ‘block parties’PROSPECT — The Prospect Community Library, 17 Center St., will have “block parties” for children from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 11 and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 18.The library received nine different sets of building materials for young children from The Office of Commonwealth Libraries through the Cruise into Kindergarten program grant.The materials will let children express themselves, from constructing simple designs to veritable engineering feats of bridge building.
