Baby girl arrives
The stork decided not to wait until Adam and Amanda Sherman had their pickup serviced Monday — the Harrisville couple’s baby girl was delivered at the dealership.
Adam Sherman said he expected the delivery to be any day, but was surprised by how quickly it happened.
“When we pulled in, she (Amanda) ran into the bathroom,” he said.
Amanda said she headed into the #1 Cochran Nissan of South Hills dealership, off Route 19 south of Pittsburgh, without an inkling of what was about to occur.
“I was not planning on delivering a baby,” she said Wednesday afternoon.
But daughter Heather Lynn had other ideas. Within minutes, Amanda’s water broke and there was no turning back.
“I hollered for help,” Amanda said.
Before anyone could arrive, the baby was delivered, a little after 1 p.m.
With 14-month-old son Alexander in tow, Adam was being waited on in the service department when he heard a woman had just delivered a baby at the dealership.
After reaching his wife, Adam spoke with an Allegheny County 911 dispatcher to receive instructions until an ambulance arrived.
“The 911 people said tie the umbilical cord,” he said.
Improvising, Adam pulled out the lace in one of his boots.
Mother and child were taken by ambulance to Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh. They returned home Wednesday with a clean bill of health.
Adam said it would not have mattered where they were when the delivery occurred, there would not have been time to get to a hospital.
Amanda said her first two pregnancies were a little calmer.
Adam said three children, counting Amanda’s daughter Emma Rose Montgomery, are sufficient, so they won’t have to worry about going through something like this again.
Amanda said she had no recommendations for pregnant women who may end up dealing with a rush delivery.
“I don’t have any advice,” she said.
Amanda said she still is reeling from the experience.
“I’m still in shock,” she said.
