HARMONY — Residents will see no tax increases for the new year.

Borough council approved its $607,772 budget earlier this month. This is a decrease of about $6,268 from 2016.

Council President Greg Such said one of the reasons for this is because of the borough attempting to manage expenses better.

He also said the borough does not plan on using as much salt this year to de-ice roads because of the mild winter.

“We’ve been kind of watching that from year to year,” Such said.

The borough’s tax rate will remain at 12.21 mills.

A mill produces $1 in revenue for each $1,000 of a property’s assessed value.

“It’s a good budget,” Such said. “It’s accurate, I hope, pending rapid inflation or a big spike in fuel prices.”

Water plant wages will be decreased from $165,000 in 2016 to $151,100 in 2017.

Such said the reason for this is because of water system supervisor Wade Ion’s retirement. He said, however, that number may increase because the borough may need to hire part-time help.

Ion retired in November and was replaced by Frank Grannon, who serves in a newly created position as operations director for the borough’s water authority.

Streets wages and police services will remain the same at $50,000 and $40,000, respectively.

Projects the borough plans to work on in 2017 include drainage issues and paving “at least one street.”

“We’re trying to ease flooding,” Such said. “We’re in a flood zone.”
