Mars grad Castello Freshman of WeekSHIPPENSBURG — Mars graduate John Castello, a freshman forward at Shippensburg University, has been named PSAC East Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week for the third time this season.Castello scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Red Raiders' 88-62 win over Shepherd. It was the fourth double-double in Castello's last six games.Shippensburg (9-0) is off to its best start in the program's history.

Cranberry's Wise nets 25 for PittNICEVILLE, Fla. — Cranberry Township resident and Pitt sophomore forward Brenna Wise tied her career-high of 25 points Tuesday night in the Panthers' 71-65 women's basketball win over McNeese State.Pitt improved to 9-3 with the win.

SRU's Hinderliter gets frosh honorsSLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University guard Brooke Hinderliter has been named PSAC West Freshman Women's Basketball Player of the Week.Hinderliter scored 14 points and grabbed three rebounds in SRU's 78-67 win over West Liberty. She scored nine points in 15 minutes in a loss to North Carolina A&T.

County Sting claim softball tourney titleThe Butler County Sting 16U softball team won the Toys For Tots Tournament, held last weekend in Port Orange, Fla.The Sting went 3-0-1 in its four games.Butler resident Alex Graham did not give up an earned run in 4.2 innings pitched and batted .714 at the plate.Harrisville's Cheyenne Hindman led the team with an .818 batting average while playing third base.Butler's Julia Gibson, the team's catcher, hit .500, as did Karns City's Alyssa Stitt.Faith Hansotte of Butler and Megan Hepler of West Sunbury batted .444 and .300, respectively.
