The Butler County prison board on Tuesday approved paying Butler Memorial Hospital $143 out of a $4,666 bill for medical treatment of a former prison worker.

County Controller Ben Holland said in an interview the prison was only responsible for a fraction of the bill.

He said the prison was originally billed in April.

“We contested that on the basis we didn’t believe the county was liable for the entire amount,” Holland said.

Holland said he believed the former employee was a part-timer who was not covered by county health insurance.

He stressed the $143 covered treatment that may have been given in 2015.

“I just didn’t want the county paying more than it was responsible for,” Holland said.
