Prison opening again delayedSKIPPACK, Pa. — The already delayed opening of the commonwealth's new $400 million state prison was scheduled to take place early next year, but officials say that's not going to happen.The Montgomery County complex will “definitely” not be opening in January.The Skippack Township prison next to SCI-Graterford was supposed to open in November 2015, and then on Oct. 24.State officials say they have asked the Office of Inspector General to investigate and are withholding about $9.5 million from general contractor Walsh/Heery until the project is done. The firm has been subject to late penalties of $35,000 a day for more than a year.

Atomic power lab fire extinguishedWEST MIFFLIN — A small fire at an atomic power laboratory was extinguished without incident or injury by the building's sprinkler system.Officials at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory say there was no threat to the public from Sunday night's fire in West Mifflin.The government-owned facility is operated for the Department of Energy and the U.S. Navy by Bechtel Bettis.The technology developed there is used to power U.S. nuclear-powered warships.The cause of the fire was still being investigated Monday. It occurred in an area that contains low-level radioactive material, none of which was released as a result of the fire.

Casey seeks review of outbreak probePITTSBURGH — U.S. Sen. Bob Casey has asked for a review of how federal health officials conducted their investigation into a 2012 Legionnaires' outbreak at the Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System.The Democrat's request for a federal inquiry comes on the heels of a Pittsburgh newspaper series that found that the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's probe of the outbreak could be compromised.E-mails from CDC officials showed a personal bias against two Legionnaires' researchers who worked at Pittsburgh's VA hospital and the disinfection system that was used to control Legionella in the facility's water.Twenty-two veterans fell ill as a result of the outbreak. Six died.Casey sits on the Senate's Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee — which oversees the CDC.

Businessman faces immigration chargesPITTSBURGH — Authorities say a businessman was charged with harboring and transporting people who weren't legally in the country and who worked at his restaurants.Federal prosecutors said a two-count federal grand jury indictment unsealed Monday names 44-year-old Xing Zheng Lin, also known as Steve Lin.Authorities allege that from about 2009 until January 2014, the McKees Rocks resident harbored and transported people who weren't legally in the country and who worked at Saga Restaurant in Monroeville, Robinson and Bethel Park.Defense attorney Frederick Sproull declined comment on the charges.
