Officers help Toys for Tots

Collection set for Saturday

Local law enforcement is doing its share to help Butler County children in need for the yuletide season.

The Butler County sheriff’s office, Butler police, Butler Township police and Butler state police are holding a Toys for Tots Stuff a Cruiser collection 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at three locations.

The sheriff’s office and state police will be at the Clearview Mall off Route 8 in Center Township, the sheriff’s office and Butler police will be at the Kmart off Hansen Avenue and the sheriff’s office and township police will be at the Walmart off Route 356.

Sheriff Mike Slupe stressed the toys will go to county families.

“Everything stays in Butler County,” Slupe said.

Township Police Chief John Hays said he was receptive to participating in the collection, which benefits children.

“It’s a good program to get into, especially this time of year,” Hays said.

The collection is being conducted in conjunction with the Bantam Marine Detachment 743.

Dennis Johnston, the detachment’s Toys for Tots coordinator, said there are 3,000 children in the county who would benefit.

Johnston said he was happy to hear about the desire for a joint law enforcement collection.

“We’re trying to get more and more people involved,” he said.

The Butler County American Legion Riders also will participate. Dennis Christie of the Legion Riders said his organization has a lengthy relationship with Toys for Tots.

“We’ve helped financially and manpower-wise at least for a dozen years or so,” Christie said.

The toys will be distributed to families at the Bantam Marine office in the Clearview Mall on Dec. 16.
