Work ethic key force behind Wise's rise
PITTSBURGH — Walking out of her office on any given day, University of Pittsburgh women's basketball coach Suzie McConnell-Serio can hear the ball bouncing on the floor of the Petersen Events Center.
She need not worry who it is.
“It's Brenna,” McConnell-Serio said, smiling. “Just working on her game.”
Cranberry Township resident and Pitt sophomore forward Brenna Wise has not become complacent, not even after making the ACC All-Freshmen team a year ago — not even after averaging 21 points and eight rebounds in the ACC Tournament, posting a team best seven double-doubles and leading all ACC freshmen in rebounding with 7.6 per game.
“She wants to be good,” McConnell-Serio said. “It's that simple with her. She'll work on her ball handling, dribbling around cones, she'll work on her 3-point shooting, her free throws ... and this is well after practice is over.
“Brenna's workouts have a purpose. She wants to be an all-around player.”
Wise started all 31 games for Pitt as a freshman and has started all five — all wins — so far this year. In 25 minutes of play against Slippery Rock Wednesday, she netted 18 points, grabbed five rebounds and had four assists.
She also drained a pair of 3-pointers.
“I don't want to be a one-dimensional player,” Wise said. “The more well-rounded player I become, the more I can help my team.”
Wise has hit the weight room particularly hard and McConnell-Serio has noticed the results.
“Her body shape has changed and she's so much stronger,” the coach said. “Brenna is a perfectionist, in the classroom, on the court, in everything she does. Her expectations of herself are off the charts.”
And she still sleeps with a basketball each night, something she's been doing for years.
“Some things never change,” Wise said, laughing.
She's hoping Pitt's women's basketball fortunes change from last season, when the Panthers got off to a hot start before fading to a 13-18 record.
But that team is another year older despite the roster having six sophomores and two freshmen among its 12 players.
“We learned a lot from last year,” Wise said. “This is a tough conference. We have to play with more discipline and confidence.
“The talent is here. It's up to us to make it work.”
A two-time PIAA Class A Player of the Year, Wise scored 2,331 career points at Vincentian and topped the 1,000-rebound plateau. She graduated with a 5.0 grade point average.
She has similarly lofty grades so far as a business major at Pitt.
“It's a fun atmosphere here,” Wise said. “The chemistry on this team is even better than the chemistry we had at Vincentian. We're 12 sisters playing together and I love it.”
And McConnell-Serio loves watching her every day.
“Brenna's ceiling is unlimited,” the coach said. “She's the most vocal player on this team, the most enthusiastic, a great leader.
“Her attitude is contagious. She's our biggest cheerleader on the bench when she's not on the floor. I glance at our bench to check the reaction when something good just happened on the court and Brenna's the ringleader.”
Through five games this year, Wise is averaging a team-leading 15.8 points and eight rebounds per game. She's hit five treys and is shooting 84 percent from the foul line.
And she's doing all of that in less than 27 minutes per game.
“As we play more meaningful, closer games, Brenna's minutes will increase,” McConnell-Serio said. “Her production will likely do the same.”
Not that the latter matters to Wise all that much.
“My goals here?,” she repeated question. “Win as much as we can.”
