Thunder Ducks win 5th straight crown
BUTLER TWP — Ryan Good does more than serve as aquatics director at the Butler YMCA.
He runs the most dominant flag football team in Butler.
Good is the organizer and quarterback of the Thunder Ducks, who recently won their fifth consecutive Butler County Parks & Recreation Co-Ed Flag Football League championship. The team defeated Team Dangerous, 38-18, in the title game last weekend.
“We lost a game this season after going unbeaten the previous three,” Good said. “We lost two games during our first year in the league.
“The league keeps getting better and bigger.”
The league had seven teams four years ago. Now it has 11 — 15 players to a roster — and figures to grow again next year.
Games are played each Sunday on two fields at Alameda Park. The regular season runs for nine weeks.
“It’s becoming more and more popular,” Butler County Parks & Recreation Program Director Ashley Helmstaedter said. “We’re getting about two more teams to join each year.”
Games last about an hour. Seven players can be on the field at a time, including two females.
“We have the best female players in the league and that makes a big difference,” Good said. “They’re all versatile and we can play them anywhere.
“It’s all about teamwork and good chemistry for us. There are other teams in the league with as much talent, but they don’t know each other or play as together as a unit as we do.”
Good said his team’s original name was Scared Hitless. They switched it to Thunder Ducks after the movie The Mighty Ducks.
“In that film, they emphasize how ducks fly together,” Good said. “We felt like we identified with that.”
The women on the Thunder Ducks roster are Cassie Miller, Bethany Ferrari, Bethany Meyer, Katresa Savisky and Ashlee Gallagher. Savisky played basketball at Butler and Point Park University.
Miller played soccer and softball at Meadville High School and rugby at Slippery Rock University.
“I’ve just always loved sports,” Miller said. “A bunch of us got together around town and started playing backyard football.
“When Ryan asked us if we wanted to put a team in this league, we were all up for it.”
Good’s brother, Beriah Good, is a middle linebacker on the squad. Other men on the team are Zack Lash, Tyler Cranmer, Zack Manuel, Chris Cole, Demetrius Lockley, Bryan Slavic and Brandon Fulton.
“A bunch of those guys played high school football,” Miller said. “We play good defense. That’s one of the biggest reasons we win.”
Good said his brother “gets at least one interception per game.”
The Thunder Ducks’ lone loss this season was a 20-18 decision to the Dream Killers early in the regular season.
“We don’t practice at all during the week,” Good said. “We used to play tackle football together, so we know each other so well.
“We just show up and play.”
