EVANS CITY — Police from four departments, some in riot gear, responded to a usually quiet street late Monday afternoon.

Evans City-Seven Fields Regional Police Department Chief Joe McCombs said a man on the north end of Belle Street called 911 to report that he had a weapon and planned to commit suicide.

The man’s refusal to leave the home prompted the large police response, but no standoff ensued and police were able to talk the man out of the house after about an hour, McCombs said.

“It resolved fairly quickly,” McCombs said.

McCombs said the man, who is not being named because of the nature of the situation, never threatened officers with the weapon and was taken to the hospital by a local ambulance.

The situation frightened neighbors on the street, which was blocked off from McKinley Street to Route 68 during the situation.

Stella Neely, who lives next door to the man, was making candy in her kitchen when a neighbor farther up the street called and told her she had heard the call on the scanner.

She then heard a tapping on the door.

“I turn around and there’s these two big guys on my porch in riot gear,” Neely said.

She said the officers told her about the situation next door and asked if they could look out her window to possibly get a better view. They then advised her to remain on the opposite side of her house in case shots were fired.

“They were kind of sneaking around the neighborhood,” Neely said.

She said shortly afterward, the man came out of the house and was talking to police. An ambulance arrived and took the man to a hospital.

Neely said the man, who makes items out of wooden pallets, made her a small outdoor table in the summer.

“He’s a nice guy,” Neely said. “I’ve never had any problem with him.”

Police from Adams and Jackson townships, plus troopers from the state police Butler barracks responded to the call.

There was no record of the man’s arrest as of Tuesday morning.
