Volunteer firefighters from Herman, East Butler, Lick Hill and Oneida Valley fire departments battle a house fire at 131 Rimp Road in Summit Township on Tuesday night. No injuries were reported.

SUMMIT TWP — A fire that started with a wood burner in a shed made its way through the connecting stove pipes to the addition of a house around 10 p.m. Tuesday at 131 Rimp Road.

Dennis Rishel, who lives with his wife, Kim, at the house, had started up the wood burner. The wood burner, located in a shed behind the house, is used to heat the house.

Not long after, Dennis Rishel smelled something burning.

“I was in the house when it started,” Kim Rishel said. “(Dennis) came in and said, 'Call 911.'”

The Rishels, pinpointing the wood burner as the source of the fire, attempted to pour water on it to contain the fire. They didn't have their hose connected, so they alerted their next door neighbors, who used their hose to fill up buckets of water, which were used to douse the wood burner.

This continued until firefighters arrived to put out the fire, which Herman fire chief Rob McLafferty said was extinguished in less than five minutes.

After that, the firefighters cleaned up the area and used fans to bring clean air into the house and blow out the smoke.

McLafferty said “extensive” damage was done to the shed and the extension of the house, while smoke damage was done to the rest of the house. He said there is no estimate on the amount of damage yet.

The fire has been ruled accidental.

Volunteer fire departments from Herman, Lick Hill, Oneida Valley and East Butler responded, while East Butler Ambulance also was on the scene.
