A 45-year-old man was injured Monday morning when he apparently fell out of a third-story window at a Butler apartment building, authorities said.

George B. Emerick Jr. landed on the street about 30 feet below the window of the building, located at 102 W. Brady Street, where he lives.

Emerick suffered serious injuries and was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital after being transported by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

Witnesses told police that Emerick was straddling the window sill, banging something, which was believed to be a white extension cord, against the frame.

Shortly afterward, said police Detective Lt. Anthony Fatta, the man was dangling by one arm with his underarm hooked over the window sill.

Emerick moved again, grasping the window sill with both hands and using his feet to feel for a ledge, before falling at about 10 a.m. Monday into the westbound lane of Brady Street across from the Dunkin’ Donuts at 236 N. Main St.

Witnesses said that Emerick’s body struck the second story window ledge, which caused him to land on the street rather than the sidewalk directly below the window. A jacket was found in the road only a few feet away, and a hat and the white extension cord were nearby on the sidewalk.

It is unknown whether Emerick let go or lost his grip.

Police said Emerick has mental health issues including depression, but they do not believe he intentionally fell out the window.

Inside Emerick’s apartment, police found a small nail hammered into the left side of the window frame and a hammer laying on the floor, which was consistent with what witnesses said.

Emerick was breathing when emergency crews arrived, a fire official said.

City police and firefighters temporarily closed Brady Street, but reopened it before 11 a.m.

Butler police, meanwhile, are investigating an unrelated weekend incident involving Emerick.

Officers were called about 2:55 p.m. Saturday to the Grapevine Center on Elm Street after he showed up there with injuries reportedly suffered in an assault.

Emerick had dried blood on his face and head, and two black eyes. He told investigators he got the injuries in the assault that occurred the previous day, according to a police report.

He said that while walking in the area of First and Brady streets near a dumpster, someone came up from behind and hit him. He apparently was unable to see his attacker. He was treated at the Butler Hospital for his injuries.
