CRANBERRY TWP — State police continue to investigate an apparent wrong-way collision Saturday afternoon on the Pennsylvania Turnpike that left two people dead.

Robert Humble, 85, of Cranberry Township was driving a Chevy Cruze east in the westbound lane, investigators said. Just before 2 p.m. in Cranberry, his vehicle collided head-on with a Ford Focus headed in the westbound lane.

Both Humble and the other driver, 56-year-old Helen O’Halloran of North Ridgeville, Ohio, were trapped in their cars, and died at the scene.

“The impact was tremendous,” said Butler County Chief Deputy Coroner John Hanovick. “Both cars had tremendous damage to their driver’s sides, and both drivers were entrapped.”

O’Halloran, who was wearing a seat belt, likely died instantly, Hanovick said.

A passenger in O’Halloran’s vehicle, her 60-year-old husband, James W. O’Halloran, was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. Believed to be asleep at the time of the collision, James O’Halloran was listed Sunday in stable condition, according to police.

Emergency crews initially called for two medical helicopters, which landed on the turnpike. But Humble, who was not wearing a seat belt, died within minutes, Hanovick said.

Autopsies performed Saturday determined Humble died of severe injuries to the chest and O’Halloran died of injuries to the head, neck and chest, Hanovick said.

Authorities said they do not believe alcohol or drugs played a factor.

The crash closed the westbound lanes for about four hours, backing up traffic for miles.
