Sing Hosana's offering, “Disney's Beauty and the Beast” may be a tale as old as time, but it's perfect for such a time as this.

The feel-good show with charming characters and a delightful score provides the perfect escape from the drama of recent days.

The show opens tonight at the Succop Theater on the Butler County Community College Campus. A small preview audience was treated to an early look.

Catherine Fuellgraf Mowery of Union Township in New Castle shone in the role of Beauty. Her vocals, mannerisms and features were every inch the character. Her most powerful opportunity came in Act II with “A Change in Me” an extremely powerful and rich delivery to be sure.

The Beast, courtesy of Don Hixon of Forward Township, was an intense offering. At times muffled a bit by the mask, Hixon's snarl was as compelling as his voice in “If I Can't Love Her.” His portrayal of the beast was commanding and intimidating.

Gaston was played by Duke Loring who gave a great performance of the over the top arrogant town tease. His sidekick Lefou, Trey Hixon, was also a delight. The duo had great chemistry and Loring had no trouble tossing the young lad about. Hixon's energy and enthusiasm on stage is fun to watch.

Staging the cast of 80-plus had to be a challenge, yet the show seemed to flow effortlessly and the ensemble cast “Be Our Guest” was epic.

The costumes were larger than life and very professional in this scene which featured dancing spoons, salt shakers and such. Spearheaded hilariously by the duo Lumiere and Cogsworth played by Nathan Rockcastle and Matt Nocera the Enchanted Castle staff were enjoyable. Mrs. Potts', Dale Riemer, rendition of “Beauty and the Beast” the title song, was beautiful.

The score of this production is wonderful and was offered up by a talented bunch of musicians under the direction of Ralph Christy, Jr.
