The Butler County salary board is considering giving roughly 150 nonunion workers a one-time payment amounting to 2 percent of their annual salary.

The projected cost to do so would be $149,527.

County Commissioner Kim Geyer said in an interview finances are being reviewed to determine the feasibility of the payment to the affected full-time and part-time employees.

“I haven’t made a decision,” Geyer said.

The salary board, which is comprised of the three commissioners and the county controller, is set to discuss the payment Wednesday.

Commissioner Leslie Osche, board chairman, previously said the payment would depend on the state of county finances heading into 2017.

Historically, nonunion employees have received what the county terms a cost-of-living adjustment.

Nonunion employees received a 2 percent COLA in 2015.

In recent years, the nonunion COLA was lower than union-mandated pay hikes.

County row officers and department heads have repeatedly expressed concerns over their nonunion staff making less money than the union workers they supervise.

Salary board members maintain the county must be careful in giving out pay hikes.

Osche credited nonunion staff for helping trim the 2016 budget, causing the board to consider approving such a payment.

County Controller Ben Holland previously said the “stipend” may be feasible.
