Physical Rockets stun Mercyhurst Prep
EDINBORO — Everything was going according to plan.
Then Kaleb Kamerer blew it up.
Mercyhurst Prep had driven 75 yards on its first possession and faced fourth-and-goal at the Slippery Rock 5-yard line in a first-round District 10 Class AAA football playoff game Saturday night at General McLane High School.
Foregoing a chip-shot field goal attempt, the Lakers opted for a screen pass to 1,400-yard rusher Zack Helsey. Defensive back Kamerer soared across the line of scrimmage and nailed Helsey for an 8-yard loss.
“That set the tone for the entire night,” Rockets' linebacker Ryan Dutton said.
Indeed, it did.
The Lakers (6-4) managed only 55 more offensive yards in the game, their offense never crossing midfield again as Slippery Rock posted a shocking 28-0 victory.
“Outside of the guys on this team and this coaching staff, nobody believed this was going to happen,” Slippery Rock coach Larry Wendereusz said. “But I knew if we came up here and did what we do, and execute, we had a shot.”
The Lakers entered the game averaging 27 points, 266 yards rushing and 332 offensive yards per game. They managed no points, 24 yards rushing and 122 offensive yards Saturday.
“That play really jump-started them,” Mercyhurst Prep coach Jeff Root said of Kamerer's tackle. “Their motor was running high the whole night.
“Not since West Middlesex (14-0 loss) have we faced a team that physical. They dominated the line of scrimmage. We couldn't run the ball and that took us out of our game.”
The only points of the first three quarters occurred with 4:44 left in the opening half. Four plays after a 36-yard screen pass to Seth Slater, Rockets quarterback Bailey Mertens found Calvin Rossi in the left corner of the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown pass.
Earlier in the second period, Nick Stutz fell just short on a 42-yard field goal attempt.
On the first play of the final quarter, linebacker Stephen Heller stepped in front of a Connor Byers pass and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown. Less than three minutes later, linebacker Jordan Martsolf picked off Byers and returned it 45 yards for a score.
Martsolf's touchdown was nullified by an illegal block, but Mertens capped a 22-yard drive moments later with a 5-yard scoring run. The play gave the Rockets (4-6) a 21-0 lead with 7:55 to play.
Heller returned a fumble 47 yards to the Lakers 13 on the next snap, setting up Kamerer's 5-yard touchdown run with 5:15 left.
“Once the ball was in my hands, I didn't want to be stopped,” Heller said. “I didn't score, but I'll take those plays.
“Our coaches had us prepared for this game. We knew we wanted to make them throw the ball.”
Helsey managed only 12 net yards on 11 carries for Mercyhurst Prep.
“Connor Byers is a gutsy player, a good player, but he's not your protypical quarterback,” Root said. “When we were forced to throw, they jumped all over it.”
Rossi dropped a potential interception for a would-be touchdown in the fourth quarter as well.
Slippery Rock generated 13 first downs and did not turn the ball over.
“Our defense has been strong all year,” Wendereusz said. “We've had games where we don't move the ball offensively and our defense gets tired.
“Tonight, we moved the ball, generated first downs, and our defense had time to relax and re-energize. Those guys were fantastic.”
Slippery Rock will take on Hickory in the next round of the playoffs this weekend.
“We won the turnover battle 3-0 and that was big,” Dutton said. “What was bigger is that we had made the playoffs four straight years and only had one playoff win.
“Tonight, we changed all of that. We believe in ourselves.”
