Researcher plunges to death in crevasseORONO, Maine — The University of Maine is holding a memorial this week for a professor who plunged into a 100-foot crevasse in Antarctica while conducting climate research for the National Science Foundation.The private service is being held on Thursday at the Buchanan Alumni House.A fund in Gordon Hamilton’s name has been established in the University of Maine Foundation, and a video tribute will be released later.Hamilton, who came to the University of Maine in 2000, spent much of his time in Greenland and Antarctica studying the movement and melting of glaciers and how that contributes to rising sea levels.He died on Oct. 22 when he and his snowmobile went into a deep crevasse, or fissure, in the ice. He was 50.
Rival bikers brawl at classic car showFARMINGVILLE, N.Y. — Police say as many as 70 members of rival motorcycle clubs brawled during a classic car show on New York’s Long Island, leaving two people hurt.Police say members of the Pagans and Hells Angels began fighting around noon on Sunday in the parking lot of the Pennysaver Amphitheater in Farmingville. Officers managed to break up the brawl and disperse the groups.Police said two people were taken to hospitals to be treated for injuries. No arrests were made.Newsday reported a large puddle of blood could be seen on the ground after the fight.
Pizza employee shoots robberCHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say a Pizza Hut employee used his own handgun to shoot and kill one of three armed robbers.The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said it happened early Sunday at a Pizza Hut near Interstate 85 in west Charlotte. Detectives said the restaurant was closed and there were no customers inside.
