HARMONY — The Harmony Museum is completing preparations for its WeihnachtsMarkt, German-style Christmas market.

The annual event will be held Nov. 12 and 13.

“The fundraiser attracts thousands of visitors to celebrate the National Landmark community’s German roots while shopping jury-selected artisanal vendors and enjoying German entertainment, food and refreshment,” Historic Harmony President John Ruch said.

Museum administrator Kathy Luek said about 5,000 people visited the borough for last year’s event.

“This is set up to be a really good one,” Luek said of this year’s market. “We’re getting better and better at it every year.”

Market hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission is free for children under 6, providing all-day access to the market, entertainment, the museum, and horse-drawn wagon rides in the historic district. Proceeds support museum operations.

“Nearly 50 specialty vendors and traditional crafters were chosen to participate for the quality of their offerings,” Ruch said.

Some of these crafts include shaker boxes, Christmas ornaments, jewelry, artwork and food, among others.

Visitors also can observe the museum’s volunteer quilters, spinners and weavers at work, and sample regionally produced wine and whiskey.

A kids crafts tent will also be for children, where youngsters can prepare a note to be mailed to Santa Claus at the Museum Shop/Village Post Office just across the street.

“It has the real feel of a German-style Christmas market,” Luek said.

Performances will be presented both market days by Alpen Schuhplattlers of Pittsburgh’s Teutonia Mannerchor.

Karl Lukitsch and The Autobahn Band appears on Saturday and Burke’s Bavarian Brass on Sunday.

Saturday visitors can also join Seneca Valley Intermediate High School Girls Chorus in singing carols as the museum’s Christmas giving tree is lighted at 5:30 p.m.

One annual staple feature however will not return.

The engine and trolley of the antique O-gauge railroad and log village platform are in need of substantial restoration.

Operating issues with another platform led to the decision that these displays will not be installed for this Christmas season.

They are expected to return in 2017.
