[naviga:h3]State-owned schools resume classes[/naviga:h3]

HARRISBURG — Classes have resumed for more than 100,000 students who attend Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned universities, including Slippery Rock.

Classes resumed today because the union representing more than 5,000 faculty members and coaches reached a tentative contract agreement Friday with the State System of Higher Education.

The new contract provides raises for all employees but also requires them to pick up a greater share of their health care costs. It must now go to the full union membership for ratification.

STATE COLLEGE — A borough official said Penn State fans celebrating the school’s upset victory over No. 2 Ohio State caused about $18,000 damage to public property.

State College Borough Manager Tom Fountaine told the Centre Daily Times that fans pulled down five street lights and damaged street light globes. Fountaine said fans also took down about 20 streets signs and stop signs.

It’s not clear how much damage was done to private property, though at least one vehicle was damaged.
