BUTLER TWP — A faulty hot water heater was blamed for causing smoke to fill up an apartment on Villa Drive on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

There was no fire and no one was injured at the Highlands Apartments.

The tenant was home about 8:40 a.m. when she noticed smoke and called 911, according to fire officials. Butler Township police and volunteer firefighters from all three township departments arrived a short time later.

“The cause appears to be a short in the heating element of the hot water tank,” said township fire marshal Larry Christy, who ruled the fire accidental.

The apartment sustained only minor damage. Firefighters ventilated the apartment before leaving.
