Mary “Arlene” Hindman
Mary “Arlene” Hindman, 96, of Butler passed away peacefully at 1 a.m. Tuesday at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born May 29, 1920, to Ambert and Laura Oaks of Corsica, Pa. As a child, she helped her mother keep the family store and look after the travelers her parents took in for the night. She spoke fondly of sleeping in the orchard each summer with her sister and of sneaking candy and other treats from the store and getting into other mischief with her brother, Dick.
In 1937, Arlene married and had a daughter with Wayne Hindman. After working the family farm together, they moved to Coudersport, Pa., to run Penn State's Camp Potato, where she would cook for the deer hunters who Wayne guided on the farm each fall.
In the 1940s, they moved to Butler to help Wayne's father, J. Mac Hindman, build a new farm supply business, which grew into Hindman Equipment. In 1963, she went to work at Schaeffer Tractor Sales, where she worked for almost 40 years. She also kept books for Black and White Express and was known to many in the community as a hostess at the Day's Inn. Greeting her regulars and complaining about, while loving, the “young kids” she worked with kept her young until she retired at 89.
Arlene treasured time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was proud of the independence and comfortable life she created, working three jobs at times, while maintaining her house and yard, mainly by herself, with perfectly painted nails, stylish hair and sharp clothes.
She is survived by her son, Steve Hindman and his wife, Hannah Kettler, of Seattle; her son-in-law, Jon Campbell of Butler; her granddaughters and their husbands, Tracy and Ken Accardi of Boston, Jenny and Homer Clark of Butler, and Dawn and Rich Rej of Plymouth, Mich.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Arlene was preceded in death by her daughter, Connie Campbell.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sunnyview for their kind and loving care while she resided there.
