Roadside bomb kills U.S. commandoWASHINGTON — A U.S. commando has been killed in Afghanistan after being hit by a roadside bomb while on patrol with Afghan forces in a northeastern province bordering Pakistan, the U.S. military said Tuesday.U.S. special operations forces have been conducting counterterror operations with Afghan troops against Islamic State militants in Achin, Nangarhar province. The U.S. military said the service member died Tuesday from wounds sustained when the patrol triggered an improvised explosive device. The commando’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of family.“Despite this tragic event, we remain committed to defeating the terrorists of the Islamic State, Khorasan Province,” Gen. John Nicholson, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said. He was referring to the Islamic State group’s affiliate in Afghanistan.Peter Cook, Pentagon press secretary, said the service member was on foot patrol when the forces hit the roadside bomb.

Train in Hoboken crash was speedingHACKENSACK, N.J. — The NJ Transit train that slammed into Hoboken Terminal last week may have been traveling two to three times faster than the posted speed limit, according to early estimates by crash investigators.That estimate contradicts an earlier statement by the train’s engineer, who told investigators he was traveling at precisely the speed limit — 10 miles an hour — when he entered the station.The estimate, provided to the Associated Press by a U.S. official briefed on the investigation, holds that the train was traveling 20 to 30 miles an hour when it barreled into the terminal.

LAPD chief hastens release of videoLOS ANGELES — Los Angeles police Chief Charlie Beck has become the latest to hasten the release of video of a deadly confrontation between police and a black man to break public tension.The video Beck released Tuesday shows that 18-year-old Carnell Snell was armed just before he was shot dead but the footage failed to capture the scene where officers say he twice turned toward them holding the loaded semi-automatic handgun.The LAPD typically releases video of police shootings only when ordered to do so by courts. Beck told reporters the Snell video was released in the interest of public safety and to correct misinformation.
