Pioneer golf team repeats WPCC title
BUTLER TWP — With a roster of all freshmen, the Butler County Community College golf team won its fourth straight Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference championship over the weekend.
The Pioneers tallied 648 for the 36-hole tournament on The Links course at Spring Church in Apollo, beating out runner-up Westmoreland CC by three strokes.
“We didn’t have the medalist for the tournament, but we won it with our depth,” BC3 coach Bill Miller said. “Our No.’s 4 through 6 guys really came through for us.”
Carmen Oliva, a Neshannock graduate, paced the Pioneers with a 161. Moniteau graduate Britton Simmons had a 164, followed by Eden Christian grad Alex Witouski’s 165.
Rounding out the BC3 scores were Neshannock grad Michael Rozzi with a 166, Shenango grad Matt Benson with a 168 and Freeport graduate Justin Hildebrand with a 168.
“You can only put six guys in the tournament, but we had nine golfers who contributed on a regular basis this year,” Miller said.
Kaden Rock (Butler), Sam Isacco (Slippery Rock) and Brian Peterson (Shenango) rounded out the roster.
Miller said this is the first time in his BC3 coaching career he’s had a roster of all freshmen. He has been coaching the Pioneer golfers for 11 years.
“It just worked out that way, a bunch of new faces,” he said. “Obviously, we’re pretty excited about the spring and next year.”
The Pioneers will play in the State Invitational Sunday and Monday at the Penn National Golf Club in Chambersburg. That will conclude the fall season.
