Keep the line moving
ADAMS TWP — He's the Robin to Isaiah Johnson's Batman.
Just don't tell other teams that.
To Mars football opponents, Garrett Reinke is a superhero in his own right.
Reinke, the second option in the Planets' devastating ground game this season, has rushed for 511 yards on 86 carries and scored five touchdowns.
Pound for pound, the 5-foot-8, 160-pound sophomore back is as tough as they come.
“He's a forgotten guy. But that's OK,” said Mars football coach Scott Heinauer. “He's always the forgotten guy. But we're glad we have him.
“You have to have two backs in this game and in this offense if you want to be successful,” Heinauer added. “We have two backs who can run the ball and we have a good line to block for them.”
Reinke had 20 tough carries for 86 yards in the 34-7 win Friday at New Castle.
Johnson, a senior, had 157 yards on 27 attempts.
With Johnson's 788 yards this season, the duo has combined for 1,299 yards and 15 touchdowns through six games.
Reinke and Johnson enjoy their collaboration in the Planets' backfield.
“Oh, man, he's a big momentum booster,” Reinke said of Johnson. “He makes all those big runs, then we have some fakes to him and it helps me a lot when I run to the outside.”
Reinke's bread-and-butter play is the jet sweep. He has the patience to wait for his blocks and the acceleration and quickness to turn the corner and burst into daylight.
Reinke can also be a bruiser, lowering his shoulders down to bull ahead for extra yardage.
“I work on that a lot in the offseason,” Reinke said. “I work on trying to stay shifty and try to stay low and lower my shoulder to get ready for the big hits.”
Johnson has the best seat in the house for Reinke's runs and Reinke for Johnson's carries.
The two also make sure to help each other out on the field.
“You have to want to block for each other,” Johnson said.
“When he's out there running hard,” Johnson added, “he makes everyone's job easier, especially mine.”
Reinke foreshadowed his breakthrough 2016 campaign last year when he was thrust into a starting role in the playoffs when Johnson could not play due to injury.
Reinke made the most of his opportunity with 86 yards and three touchdowns in a wild 48-41 loss to Central Valley.
Reinke rushed for 291 yards as a freshman.
He's the latest in a long line of Mars runners who had an apprenticeship under upperclassmen ballcarriers.
“It's exciting. There's been a lot of great running backs to come through Mars,” Reinke said. “I'm working hard to try to get there and I'm sticking with Isaiah because he's such a great running back.”
