Noted pianist performs as orchestra season debuts

BUTLER TWP — The Butler County Symphony Orchestra's 68th concert season begins with “Magnificent Russians” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Butler Intermediate High School.

Selections will include Rimsky-Korsakov's “Scheherazade” along with Rachmaninoff's “Piano Concerto No. 2” featuring soloist Sean Chen.

The 28-year-old American pianist won third prize at the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and was the 2013 DeHaan Classical Fellow of the American Pianists Association.

He was named a 2015 fellow by the Leonore Annenberg Fellowship Fund for the Performing Arts.

He has performed with many prominent orchestras.

Solo recitals have brought him to major venues worldwide, including Jordan Hall in Boston, Subculture in New York City, and the American Art Museum at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

Chen has been featured in both live and recorded performances. His recent CD releases include “La Valse,” a solo recording on the Steinway label.

A pre-concert lecture with conductor Matthew Kraemer will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $23 for adults and $5.50 for students.
