School bus drives off road

UPDATE: Statement by Butler School District says four children and the bus driver were taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with injuries after a Butler School District bus left Bonniebrook Road this morning.

SUMMIT TWP - Several school children appeared to have suffered minor injuries in a two-vehicle accident involving a school bus this morning.

According to state police, a Valley Lines bus traveling south at 9:18 a.mtoward Summit Elementary School crossed the northbound lane, struck an oncoming Dodge Ram truck pulling a trailer and then continued northbound over a guard rail and onto an embankment.

The bus, according to a witness, was carrying about 25 children. The witnesses, including Jeff Lyons of Harrisville, said the children appeared to have only cuts and bruises but were “shaken up” and some were crying.

The bus driver was taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital.

State police at the scene said the cause of the accidents still is under investigation, but is possible the school bus had a mechanical issue.

The names of the drivers and students involved have not been released.

Butler School District officials said they will release a statement shortly.
