SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University Performing Arts Series kicks off its new season Friday with a performance by Women of the World.

The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the University Union.

The ensemble won the national Harmony Sweepstakes, which is billed as the longest-running a cappella competition in the country, in 2014.

The quartet performs folk and traditional music, with a contemporary twist, in 29 languages.

The four singers are Ayumi Ueda, Giorgia Renosto, Annette Philip and Deborah Pierre.

In addition to winning the Harmony Sweepstakes, Women of the World was nominated for the Boston Music Awards in 2013 and the Independent Music Awards in 2014. The group has performed at the Blue Note Jazz Club, Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival and at United Nations events.

General admission is $22 for adults, $20 for senior citizens, $18 for youths 17 or younger and $8 for SRU students.

The Performing Arts Series will continue with the Annie Moses Band, a classical-crossover string and vocal band, Oct. 23.
