Bridge might open early

The Sullivan Run Bridge on Cunningham Street should be open earlier than expected, a PennDOT engineer said Wednesday.

It all depends on the results of a final inspection of the structure which has been scheduled for early next week. No official opening date for the bridge has been set according to Brian Steffy, an assistant engineer for PennDOT overseeing the work.

The $2.2 million project began April 25 and was expected to continue until mid-October, but Steffy said he was confident that the bridge — which had its existing structure has been replaced with a box culvert — would reopen before then.

A final inspection of the structure is scheduled for Sept. 20, and it could be opened to vehicle traffic “shortly thereafter,” if no issues are found, Steffy said.

John Evans, the city’s code enforcement officer, said contractors have some sealing and concrete work yet to perform at the job site, as well as testing for the arm that will hold traffic signals for the road’s eastbound lane.
