SV grad Seman shines in upsetPITTSBURGH — Seneca Valley graduate Angela Seman, a redshirt sophomore on the University of Pittsburgh women's volleyball team, helped the Panthers upset No. 22 and previously unbeaten Michigan over the weekend.Seman had 26 digs from the back row to lead Pitt in its 3-2 victory over the Wolverines at the Panther Invitational. She also had 28 digs in a 3-1 win over American.Seman was one of three Pitt players named to the all-tournament team.

Kaepernick, Reid kneel during anthemSANTA CLARA, Calif. — Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid once again kneeled during the national anthem before the San Francisco 49ers’ season opener against the Los Angeles Rams.No other Niners players joined in the protest Monday night, although Rams defensive lineman Robert Quinn and receiver Kenny Britt held fists up during the anthem.Kaepernick has refused to stand for the anthem all season in protest of police brutality and racial oppression in the United States. Reid joined him during the final exhibition game when the two decided to kneel, instead of sit, in a move meant to show more respect to veterans.Several other players around the league took part in similar protests on opening weekend.

NCAA pulls events from North CarolinaThe NCAA has pulled seven championship events from North Carolina, including opening-weekend men’s basketball tournament games, for the coming year due to a state law that some say can lead to discrimination against LGBT people.In a news release Monday, the NCAA says the decision by its board of governors came “because of the cumulative actions taken by the state concerning civil rights protections.”The law — known as HB2 — requires transgender people to use restrooms at schools and government buildings corresponding to the sex on their birth certificates. It also excludes gender identity and sexual orientation from local and statewide antidiscrimination protections.HB2 was signed into law by Gov. Pat McCrory earlier this year.

Golfers selected for Ryder CupCHASKA, Minn. — U.S. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III chose Rickie Fowler, J.B. Holmes and Matt Kuchar for three of his four picks for the upcoming showdown with Europe at Hazeltine.Love announced his choices on Monday, a day after the BMW Championship.Holmes finished 10th in the Ryder Cup standings and is one of the few active Americans to have never lost in the event.Those three join Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Jimmy Walker, Brooks Koepka, Brandt Snedeker and Zach Johnson.
