DENVER — A school bus carrying high school football players veered off a road and slammed into a concrete pillar at Denver International Airport, killing the driver and injuring 18 passengers, some seriously, officials said.

The bus had just picked up arriving members of the Legacy High School football squad Sunday afternoon and was circling back to the airport when it crashed. Airport spokesman Stacey Stegman told the Denver Post that the bus carried 28 students and four adults.

The female driver died at the scene, police spokesman John White said. Ten people were hospitalized and eight others treated and released, officials said. The Post reported that the injured were 15 students and three coaches from the suburban Denver school.

Officials at Denver Health said that they have five patients: two are in critical condition, two are in serious condition and one is in fair condition. Five patients in fair condition were taken to Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Police have not released any information on the cause of the crash, which occurred at 4:08 p.m., and White said they don’t know why the driver was returning to the airport after picking up the team.

Legacy High School is in Broomfield, Colo., and is part of Adams 12 Five Star Schools. The football team from Legacy played Chino High School on Friday night in California.

TAMPA, Fla. — Police say a Florida man asking if a bulletproof vest “still worked” was fatally shot by his cousin.

A Tampa Police report says 23-year-old Joaquin Mendez put on the vest late Saturday and “wondered aloud whether it still worked.”

Police say his cousin, 24-year-old Alexandro Garibaldi, pulled out a gun and responded, “Let’s see.”

Officers found Mendez outside the house with a gunshot wound in his chest. Mendez died at a hospital.

According to the report, Garibaldi initially told officers he found his wounded cousin after hearing a gunshot. However, police say a witness described Garibaldi shooting Mendez.

Police say the vest was found inside the house with a gunshot.

Garibaldi was held Sunday without bond on a manslaughter charge. Hillsborough County jail records didn’t show whether he had an attorney.

McLEAN, Va. — A northern Virginia mansion that resembles the White House is going up for auction.

The Federal-style mansion was built in 1989 and has a rounded portico similar to the one on the southern facade of the White House.

The 12,500-square-foot, six-bedroom home goes on auction next month.

Jeff Stein, a partner with real estate auction firm Tranzon Fox, says he expects opening bids in the $3 million range. He calls it the “White House on Georgetown Pike.”

The home is not the only one in the neighborhood inspired by the White House. There’s an even more faithful imitation of the executive mansion, with replicas of the Oval Office, Truman Balcony and Lincoln Bedroom.

NEW YORK — Authorities say a New York City woman attacked two Muslim women who were pushing their young children in strollers and tried to rip off one woman’s hijab.

Court documents say Emirjeta Xhelili approached the women near her Brooklyn home Thursday afternoon, punching one of them in the head as she screamed obscenities and told her to leave America.

Authorities say Xhelili pushed the woman’s stroller toward the ground and later tried to grab the second woman’s stroller.

Xhelili faces charges including assault, menacing and endangering the welfare of a child. The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office has described the incident as a hate crime.

Xhelili is being held on $50,000 bond or $25,000 cash bail. Her lawyer tells the New York Daily News Xhelili has no previous arrests.
