Cranberry saves more than $100K

Energy rebates add up in Twp.

CRANBERRY TWP — The township has saved more than $100,000 in less than two years by taking advantage of state and federal energy rebates.

The supervisors Thursday night saw a presentation by Jason Dailey, township public works director, who talked about the township’s efforts to reduce energy usage and be more efficient.

The township has been able to collect rebates against its usage by showing that it has purchased energy efficient equipment and taken steps to conserve energy, he said.

Examples of this include changing lighting and replacing pumps and motors at the Brush Creek Water Pollution Control Facility, which is the township facility that consumes the most power.

It also participates in a demand-response program where some township facilities shut off all electricity for a short time during very hot or very cold days when there is peak usage on the grid.

The rebates are given out by Pennsylvania and PJM Interconnection, the national organization that manages the electricity grid in this area. They are designed to encourage customers to use less power.

“Congress has advised everybody that is in that market that they need to offer incentives for people to improve their efficiency in energy usage and to cut their load,” he said.

In 2015, the township used about $912,000 in electricity, but it saved $47,000 through rebates.

To date in 2016, it has used $504,000 and has saved $61,000 — which is 12 percent of its usage — from rebates.

Officials anticipate receiving more rebates under Pennsylvania Act 129 as it upgrades and expands the Brush Creek Water Pollution Control Facility during the next several years, he said.

“I appreciate the effort. I know it is a confusing web of tanglement when you start looking at energy and how to capitalize on savings,” said Dick Hadley, supervisor chairman.
