Woman charged with stealing women's wallets at movies

CRANBERRY TWP — Police have charged a woman with stealing wallets from women in a movie theater.

Latania S. Chamberlain, 35, of West Chester, Chester County, faces 34 felony charges including multiple counts of conspiracy, forgery, identity theft, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and access device fraud.

On Friday she appeared in district court where she was arraigned, waived her charges to court and was released on a nonmonetary bail.

Chamberlain allegedly went on a pickpocketing spree between October 2013 and March 2015, according to the criminal complaint filed Aug. 2 by township police.

Five of the alleged thefts occurred at the Cranberry Cinemas, while a sixth incident was at the Marshall’s store, also in Cranberry Mall.

In total, she allegedly made 34 fraudulent purchases with 15 stolen cards, totaling $19,341.

The first incident occurred Oct. 25, 2013, at the theater.

Chamberlain and another woman, who police did not identify, allegedly were seen on surveillance footage going from theater to theater until they found a purse on the floor. Police allege that after taking a wallet, the two used three credit cards to buy $6,008 in items from Sheetz, Best Buy, Walmart, Target and T.J. Maxx in Cranberry.

In the other incidents at Cranberry Cinemas, patrons reported their purses were either on the floor or hanging from an armrest while they were watching a movie. They would later discover their wallets were missing.
