Man struck by truck on Interstate 70CHARLEROI — Authorities say an Ohio man who stopped and got out of his car on an interstate was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer.The Washington County coroner’s office said 19-year-old Osman Mohammad Bakali of West Chester Township, Ohio was in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 between mile markers 35 and 36.Officials said he thought he struck something at about 9 a.m. Saturday, so he pulled his sedan over to the side of the road to check for damage. But as he was walking around his vehicle, he was hit by a westbound tractor-trailer.Bakali was pronounced dead about an hour later. The coroner’s office said he died of multiple blunt-force trauma. A ruling on the manner of death is pending. State police are investigating the accident.

Truck driver crushed by pipesLIMERICK — Authorities are investigating the death of a truck driver killed when a load of pipes he was carrying fell on him.Police in Montgomery County said they were called shortly before 8 a.m. Friday to a commercial complex in Limerick, where a 62-year-old truck driver from Texas had arrived at a N.H. Yates Co., which was closed.Limerick police said the truck operator began unloading a delivery of PVC pipes, but the load shifted and fell on him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are investigating along with the Montgomery County coroner’s office. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said that because the driver was an independent owner/operator, the case would be a matter for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Man dies while swimming at quarryBANGOR — Officials say a 20-year-old man died at a popular and dangerous eastern Pennsylvania quarry.Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek says the Howell, N.J., man was swimming at an abandoned quarry in Bangor with seven other young people Sunday when officials say he went underwater and didn’t resurface.Officials didn’t release the victim’s name.The Seven Slopes of Slate quarry has long attracted visitors because of its translucent water and 100-foot-high cliffs. But discarded machinery underwater and shocking changes in temperature in the quarry can be dangerous to swimmers.

Dirt bike crash proves deadlyPENN HILLS — Authorities say a man died of injuries after a dirt bike crash in Penn Hills.Penn Hills police said 48-year-old Chester Gaunt and his 14-year-old son were riding in the Gascola slag dump area.Chief Howard Burton said Gaunt swerved to avoid a collision with a 17-year-old riding a dirt bike in the opposite direction, and both riders crashed.The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office said Gaunt was taken to Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, where he was pronounced dead at about 5 p.m. Saturday. An autopsy is planned.The other rider broke an arm and was taken to a hospital. Penn Hills police are investigating the accident.
