Inmate kills bailiffs in escape attemptST. JOSEPH, Mich. — A jail inmate was handcuffed when he wrested a gun from a sheriff’s deputy and killed two bailiffs as he was being escorted from a holding cell to the courtroom at a southwestern Michigan courthouse, a sheriff said Tuesday.Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey said he had wrong information Monday night when he told reporters that Larry Darnell Gordon was not restrained during his deadly escape attempt in St. Joseph.Bailey said a fight broke out in a nonpublic area of the courthouse Monday afternoon, giving Gordon, 44, the opportunity to disarm Deputy James Atterberry Jr.Gordon, who was locked up on several felony charges, shot Atterberry, then killed Joseph Zangaro, 61, and Ronald Kienzle, 63, both retired police officers. He also shot a woman in the arm, the sheriff said.Bailey said Gordon took hostages for a short period before trying to leave through another door. The inmate then was fatally shot “by two other bailiffs who came to render aid, along with several other officers,” Bailey said.
5 arrested after shooting at policeWASHINGTON — Police in Washington have arrested five people they say opened fire on police.No injuries were reported early Tuesday.The latest incident follows protests over police killings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota and the fatal shooting of five police officers in Dallas last week.Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said by telephone that officers responded to gunshots in southeast Washington. When officers arrived in marked police cruisers, people inside an SUV began shooting at them. Sternbeck says police returned fire at the suspects, who barricaded themselves in the vehicle.After about 30 minutes, three women and two men in the SUV surrendered.
911 probe launched after death of manFREDERICKSBURG, Va. — A 911 dispatch center in Virginia is under investigation after a man died when no one responded to his call.Robert Paulus, 56, died of heart disease in late April in his Fredericksburg apartment. According to Robert Paulus’s son, Michael Paulus, his father called 911 hours before his death.In the 18-second call to Fredericksburg City Dispatch, the dispatcher tried three times to make contact with Robert Paulus. After hearing nothing but an unidentifiable sound, the call was labeled a pocket call, where no call back is required.Hours later, Robert Paulus was found dead.
