Mayor receives award for serviceEVANS CITY — The Evans City Lions Club on Tuesday night bestowed the Melvin Jones Fellowship on Mayor Dean Zinkhann for his service to the community.Lion member Robin Swank said the club will donate $1,000 in Zinkhann’s honor to Lions Clubs International for services to the blind, medication for children in Third World countries and other charitable projects.The council members and others at the meeting, where Zinkhann was surprised with the award, gave the mayor a round of applause.
Sheriff’s office to do compliance checksStores selling tobacco to anyone under 18, beware. The Butler County sheriff’s office will do compliance checks through September.Sheriff Mike Slupe said his office will send minors to about 200 businesses to try to buy cigarettes or chewing tobacco.Slupe said last year’s compliance checks resulted in only a few violators.The county commissioners on Wednesday approved a contract between Slupe’s office and Adagio Health, which is the primary contractor for the state Department of Health for the program.The county is paid $50 via federal funds funneled through Adagio for each visit to a store selling tobacco.Slupe said at the meeting the county netted $10,000 from doing the checks last year.Violators can be fined up to $300.The commissioners also approved allotting $300 for the minors to use in the stores.
