New workout park to open in Zelienople

Includes pull-up bars, open space

ZELIENOPLE — A workout park will be built soon in the borough community park.

The workout park, scheduled for a late summer completion, will have multiple pull-up bars, dip bars and open space for push-ups, sit-ups and squats.

“This project’s purpose is to give our community a safe, free and friendly environment to workout outside,” said project organizer Matt White.

White of Zelienople, who is a certified personal trainer, said doing such workouts increase flexibility and durability.

“It’s learning how to control your own weight instead of lifting heavy weights,” White said. “We encourage everybody to get moving.”

He said the workout park will be like “a playground for adults.” However, it will not impede on kids in the community park.

Once the workout park is done, White will have free personal classes for interested people.

White said he wanted to create the workout park after traveling the world and realizing its popularity in Europe.

“It’s the first of its kind as far as I know in the state,” he said of the workout park.

The workout park is being funded by donations and by White.

While White is working with park officials on the workout park, the parks board was unable to provide additional funding due to renovation projects.

He said the project has raised about $6,000. It needs about $11,000 for completion.

However, more money made in the future will be reinvested into adding more to the workout park.

“We’ll have enough money to level the ground and money to put one of the bars up,” community park director Alecia Flood said.

A demonstration featuring finalists from “American Ninja Warrior” will take place Monday, right after the borough’s Fourth of July parade. The demonstration will be a fundraiser for the project.

An obstacle course will be set up for people to race through with prize giveaways. Children activities will also be there.

Plans for the workout park also will be presented.

A donation of $500 or more will get a permanent plaque on the workout bars with the donor’s name.

Flood said one of the benefits of the workout park is that people of all ages and genders can use it.

“We’re almost all set,” she said. “I just can’t wait for it to be done.”
