Mars reveals sports roster minimums
ADAMS TWP — The minimum and maximum number of players for each sports team in the Mars School District has been released.
If the minimum numbers are not met, the team would not be formed for that season, said Superintendent Wesley Shipley.
A pair of assistant varsity football coaches earlier this month told the school board that many coaches are concerned they are taking a risk preparing for a season when the minimum number of students may not sign up.
Shipley said if a team is not formed, then the coaches for that team would not be paid their stipends.
Shipley said the numbers, which were determined by athletic director Scott Heinauer, were set low to allow students the best opportunity to join a team.
Shipley said the ninth-grade football team was canceled this past school year, and the players who signed up were moved to the junior varsity team.
He said the ninth-grade coaches were moved to junior varsity and varsity positions
“It isn’t our intent to keep our students from competing,” he said. “However, some sports, like golf, require a certain number of scores to field a complete team.”
He said the district also would help students in individual sports whose team was canceled because of insufficient numbers.
“If we fall below the minimum in individual sports such as golf, and we do cancel a team for a given year, students can still compete as independents and the district can help facilitate that as well,” Shipley said.
