Waterway cleanup needs volunteersA regional effort to pick up litter and debris from waterways in the Ohio River watershed needs volunteers for the 26th annual River Sweep Saturday morning.In Butler, the cleanup site is along the Connoquenessing Creek near Nagel Car Wash, 201 S. Monroe St., near the Look Out Point Bridge, from 8 a.m. to noon.Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and long pants, and take work gloves, if available. Volunteers must sign a waiver and will receive a free River Sweep T-shirt for participating.There are more than 10 cleanup points in Pennsylvania. Textor School Road to be pavedJACKSON TWP — A township road will be paved this summer.The township supervisors Monday morning approved paving Textor School Road up to the Sportsmen’s Club.Paving will be done by Adam Eidemiller Inc. of Greensburg.Township manager Chris Rearick said the township received a $34,000 grant for the project.“It’s really intended to act like pavement,” Rearick said about the aggregate to be used. “It’s compacted and a cost-effective way to do it and address drainage.”The township also will buy cross pipes to improve drainage on that road.No exact date has been given on when the road will be paved.

First Friday event features ice creamHARMONY — The Harmony Museum Shop’s third free First Friday on July 1 will celebrate ice cream during an open house at the Wagner House annex and garden, 222 Mercer St.The First Friday events have a theme based on a National Day designation.For the July outing, visitors are invited to socialize from 4 to 7 p.m. and discuss the area’s history while enjoying ice cream with toppings, beverages and music by the Harmony Hot Haus quartet.The shop offers a 15 percent discount on purchases during First Friday events.Visitors also can do a self-tour of Harmony’s National Historic Landmark District.
