High-speed chase ends with charges

CALLERY — A suspected drunken driver led police on a four-mile, high-speed chase because he did not want to get arrested for driving under the influence.

But when it was over late last Saturday night, Andrew C. Cypher, 27, of Forward Township was not only under arrest for DUI but also a more serious felony charge of fleeing police.

He was arraigned on several charges and placed in the Butler County Prison on $15,000 bail.

A Callery police officer was monitoring traffic at Kline Avenue and Euclid Street in the borough about 11:30 p.m. when he spotted Cypher’s car speed by. The vehicle was traveling about 65 mph in the 25 mph zone, according to court documents.

The officer activated his emergency lights and siren but the suspect did not stop, Instead, police said, he sped up to 76 mph and drove into Forward Township.

Cypher ran several stop signs and traveled outside his lane of traffic while trying to get away from police, documents said. He took Marburger and Browns Mill roads before finally stopping on Brownsdale Road.

Asked why he didn’t stop sooner, police said, Cypher replied that he “did not want to get a DUI.” The officer noted the suspect smelled of alcohol and appeared impaired.

He later refused to take a blood test, police said.

District Judge William Fullerton arraigned Cypher on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude police, DUI, reckless endangerment, speeding and reckless driving.
