Eagle County Amateur Open set for Aug. 14

CRANBERRY TWP — The 22nd annual Butler Eagle County Amateur golf tournament will be played Aug. 14 at Cranberry Highlands.

The event will be held there for the first time since 2013, when Sean Knapp carded a 6-under-par 64 to win by five strokes over runner-up Jeremy Plaisted.

“Cranberry Highands is a wonderful test for golf,” Eagle County Amateur committee member Rob Voltz said. “The course brings a championship tournamenrt feel to the event.

“We play this tournament at a lot of great facilities, but there’s something about this place.”

Voltz said the tournament can only handle a field of 176 golfers — “180 at the most” — and the Eagle County Amateur had a full field there three years ago.

Entry fee is $80 this year, which includes a cart. Golfers will not be permitted to walk the course.

“The flat fee of $80 covers everything for everybody,” Voltz said. “Last time we held the tournament there, we saw a lot of golfers we don’t normally see. A lot of Cranberry area golfers played.

“People have a habit of signing up late for this event. We’re encouraging early sign-ups this year for those who really want to play. Once we’re told we can’t take on anymore golfers, that’s it.”

Entry forms are available periodically in the Butler Eagle and will soon be distributed to area golf courses. Golfers may also register by calling Voltz at 724-822-4189.

Shotgun starts will be available at 7:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. for the 18-hole stroke play event. Champions will be crowned for a championship flight (0-6 handicap), first flight (7-12), second flight (13-17) and third flight (18-up). A women’s division champion and seniors division (age 50 or older) champion will also be recognized.

The entry fee includes greens fees, cart, Skins game (by flight) and prizes.

Scott Vice won last year’s Eagle Amateur at Oakview, carding a 7-under-par 63. Voltz was second with 69, followed by Jim Hepler, Rick Stimmel and Chuck Moody at even par 70.

Marissa DeCola shot a 76 for the women’s championship, edging Jenna Rinker by a stroke. First flight champion was Steve Chiappini with a 74 while Paul Marovich won the second flight with an 83, Ron Vodenichar the third flight with an 88.

There were 140 golfers in the field last year.

Knapp is a five-time champion of the Eagle Amateur, last winning at Cranberry Highlands. Other than Knapp, the event has not had a two-time winner since Mark Young (1995 and 2002).
