Walk-off win for BlueSox
Leave it to the Tylers to work late.
Tyler Sullivan’s two-out single to center plated Tyler Niemann from second base in the ninth inning Wednesday night and handed the Butler BlueSox a 5-4 Prospect League victory over Chillicothe at Kelly Automotive Park.
The single marked Sullivan’s second walk-off hit for the BlueSox (3-3) in four days. He plated the winning run in Sunday night’s 2-1 win.
“It’s a lot of fun,” said Sullivan, a Seton Hill University infielder. “I can’t remember ever having a walk-off hit before at any level of baseball.”
Sullivan is in his second season with the BlueSox.
“He’s one of our veteran players and it’s good to see him come through with late inning clutch at bats and help win us some ballgames,” Butler manager Jason Radwan said.
Niemann, coming off a strong sophomore year at Morehead State, made his BlueSox debut a memorable one Wednesday. After lining out to right field in his first at bat, he lined a single to right in the fifth, tripled to center to plate a run in the seventh and scored the tying run himself that inning.
Niemann singled sharply to right with one out in the ninth frame. With two outs, he took second on a pitch in the dirt that was blocked by the catcher.
“I knew the ball was going to bounce off him and roll a bit, so I took off right away,” Niemann said. “It was important for me to get into scoring position there.”
Sullivan then delivered the game-winner.
“Their pitcher was throwing low sliders and I was able to lay off,” Sullivan said. “That was heads up by Nimo to get to second when the ball was in the dirt.
“All I needed to do at that point was slap a single. I reached out and poked an outside pitch into left-center.”
Seneca Valley graduate Connor Coward started on the mound for the BlueSox and was locked in a scoreless tie before throwing eighht straight balls to start the fifth inning. That led to a three-run inning for Chillicothe.
Before that spell of wildness, Coward had 16 strikeouts and no walks in 11 innings in his first two starts for Butler.
Coward was pulled after the sixth frame, having thrown 85 pitches and striking out seven.
“He didn’t throw a whole lot of innings in college this year,” Radwan said. “Now he’s a starter for us. I think he was getting fatigued, so we got him out of there.”
Nick Stotler reached on an infield error and scored on a fielder’s choice for the BlueSox in the fifth. Butler took the lead with a three-run seventh. Jamie Switalski walked and scored on Niemann’s triple over the center fielder’s head.
Pinch-hitter Dillion Sunnafrank — signed to a temporary contract — delivered a pinch-hit single up the middle to tie the game. Sunnafrank stole second and scored the go-ahead run on Garret Vrbanic’s two-out bloop single to right.
“Sunnafrank is going to join us full-time. He’s doing a lot of good things for us,” Radwan said.
A towering home run to right by the Paints’ Jack Thompson tied the game in the eighth, setting up the BlueSox’ ninth-inning heroics.
Zachary Patterson pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to get the win. David Current — who just joined the Paints Wednesday morning — pitched the bottom of the ninth and got the loss.
“I don’t know much about him except he’s a late-inning guy,” Chillicothe manager Brian Bigam said. “This was a good game. Both starting pitchers threw well and there was timely hitting by both sides.
“Tough one to lose, that’s for sure.”
Kevin Zullo pitched the first six innings for Chillicothe, throwing just 65 pitches, before running into trouble in the seventh.
“He was dominant early. Then he got tired,” Bigam said.
And the Tylers got busy.
“Most of our regular guys are here now,” Radwan said. “Niemann is a good bat who just got here and he’ll be an every-day player for us. He definitely gave the lineup a boost tonight.”
Niemann hit over .300 at Morehead State this spring.
