Woman rescued after ATV rolls down embankment

ALLEGHENY TWP — Rescue crews labored to get an unidentified woman out of a weekend predicament after she crashed her all-terrain vehicle over an embankment.

The terrain was so treacherous and the hillside so steep, authorities said, that rescuers had to tether the woman’s Stokes basket to the winch of another ATV, which pulled her up to safety.

She suffered head, neck and back injuries and a medical helicopter later flew her to an unspecified Pittsburgh hospital. Her condition was not known.

The woman was with a group of other ATV riders in the in the township’s Six Points section Sunday shortly before 5 p.m., officials said, when she lost control of her vehicle near Maple Furnace Road. A child was riding on the back.

The ATV rolled down an embankment in a secluded area of the township. Eau Claire and Parker volunteer firefighters and Petrolia and Emlenton ambulance crews were called.

Rescuers had to put the woman on a backboard and in a Stokes basket before she was pulled up the embankment, authorities said. Crews also rescued the child, who’s name was not known.

The child was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries.

The woman was later eased onto a pickup truck, which drove her to a nearby field, where the helicopter landed and flew her.
