John Dengel

John Dengel, 97, of Passavant Retirement Community, Zelienople, formerly a longtime resident of Economy Borough, went to be home with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday.

Born in Leetsdale and a graduate of Leetsdale High School, he was the son of the late Simon Dengel and Nellie Koren Dengel and brother of the late Simon Dengel and Nellie Rittleman. He also was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Anna Nester Dengel, in 2003.

John is survived by his son, Edward Dengel and his wife, Linda, of Zelienople; and his daughter, Kathy Irvin and her husband, Rick, of Gray Court, S.C. Also, John is survived by his grandson, Craig Dengel and his wife, Kimberly, of Baton Rouge, La.; his granddaughter, Laura Dengel of Zelienople; his special friends from Passavant, Fay and Linda Kati; and many nieces and nephews.

Dad lived an abundant life of many years and when asked the secret of longevity he would reply that he never drank or smoked and would sleep good at night with a clear conscience.

A wonderful, loving father, grandfather and husband, he was an exemplary role model of a man who placed his trust and faith in Jesus. He was a lifetime member of St John's Lutheran Church in Ambridge.

Employed as a machinist for many years at Bethlehem Steel, Leetsdale, he developed a keen eye for precision and detail and that carried over into everything he did in life.

He enjoyed bowling for many years in several leagues, gardening, fishing and being an all around handyman with tools. John was friendly with everyone he met and enjoyed the many friends and neighbors, kind staff and nurses that cared for him at Passavant.

Dad will be missed here, but we will see him again someday with the Lord.
