Man cleaning gun shoots self
A man was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital Thursday night after accidentally shooting himself in the leg while cleaning a gun at his home in Butler’s Island neighborhood, authorities said.
The 54-year-old man’s injuries were not considered serious. City police are investigating but they did not immediately release his name.
The man told emergency crews that he was cleaning his 9 mm pistol at his home in the 300 block of Negley Avenue shortly before 9 p.m. when it discharged.
The gunshot hit him in his left upper leg and passed through the limb. The bullet apparently did not hit any arteries.
“There wasn’t a lot of blood,” said Lt. Scott Marshall of the Butler Fire Department. Police recovered the slug.
Alcohol or drugs were not involved, officials said.
Other family members were there and 911 was notified. City fire department and Butler Ambulance Service medical crews arrived to treat the victim.
“We bandaged him up and got him out of there as quick as we could,” Marshall said.
Rescuers carried the man on a backboard to an ambulance, which took him to Allegheny General Hospital. His condition was not known this morning.
Authorities said it appeared that the man’s pride was hurt worse than his leg.
“He was mad at himself,” Marshall said, “more than anything.”
