Bachman goal tally at 99 and counting

Knoch graduate Holly Bachman has scored 99 goals in three seasons for the Waynesburg University women's lacross team.

WAYNESBURG — Her team rarely wins, its roster isn’t full and the squad sometimes plays shorthanded.

But Holly Bachman keeps on scoring.

A lot.

The Knoch graduate and Waynesburg University junior women’s lacrosse player has netted 99 goals in three seasons from her attack position for the Yellow Jackets. That includes a school single-season record 42 as a sophomore.

“Holly has an excellent left hand and can shoot from either side,” first-year Waynesburg coach Stephanie Benkowski said. “Few players at the Division III level can do that.

“She is such a smart player. She knows when she can go for it and she knows when she should pass. She sees the field so well.”

Waynesburg has had a lacrosse program for 10 years. Its team record for wins is five, set last year. This year’s team finished 2-11.

A full roster is 22 players. The Yellow Jackets have 15. Twelve players are on the field at one time, including the goalkeeper.

“We’ve had games where we’ve played one or two people short,” Bachman admitted. “We beat Hanover in overtime when we were two people short.”

Injuries and/or some players being unavailable to make a trip have caused Waynesburg to play entire games shorthanded.

“I think it happened four times this year,” Benkowski said. “The previous coach didn’t do enough recruiting. That’s why I’m the coach now.

“Within a couple of years, my plan is to have a full roster in place.”

Of course, Bachman will be gone by then. She appreciates her time at Waynesburg nonetheless.

“I love lacrosse,” she said. “I’m thankful to have the opportunity to continue playing in college. I know a lot of people don’t get that chance.”

Bachman and senior midfielder Jess Rains have been more than leaders for Waynesburg lacrosse. Benkowski describes the pair as responsible for “holding us together as a team.

“They are so upbeat all of the time,” the coach said.

Bachman was a defender during her lacrosse years at Knoch and was team MVP there. She came to Waynesburg and was moved to an attack position as a freshman.

She’s been a goal-scoring machine ever since.

“We had a shortage of players up front when I came here,” Bachman said. “The team had a need and I was asked to step up there and fill it.

“I knew I could play the position. I filled in briefly there in high school and it was fun.”

Bachman’s goal next season is to break her own single-season goal scoring mark of 42 — and lead the team to a few more wins. She was elected as team captain last year.

“That meant the world to me because the team votes for that,” she said. “The fact they picked me was a huge honor that I take very seriously.”

Waynesburg is a member of the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference, which encompasses a few veteran programs and some fairly new teams.

It is the new teams that have yet to figure out how to defense Bachman.

“Some of the teams that have been around for a while are putting two or three defenders on her,” Benkowski said. “The newer teams still don’t pay a lot of attention to her.”

Of course, that could change next year.

Also a solid volleyball player at Knoch, Bachman does not compete in that sport during the fall in college. As an athletic training major, she is not permittted to play more than one sport.

Benkowski doubles as Waynesburg’s volleyball coach.

“Holly could definitely help our volleyball team if she was able,” the coach said.

While she played lacrosse in the spring, Bachman also helped out in athletic training with the Yellow Jacket football team during its spring drills. She works with other sports during the fall and winter.

“I love that side of sports as well,” Bachman said.

While she admits to wondering what her goal totals might be like if she was playing on a team with a full roster, Bachman is still quite content playing for Waynesburg.

“Just because the roster numbers aren’t there ... That doesn’t reflect how well our team plays together,” she said. “I’m thrilled to be here and I can’t wait for next year.”
