ZELIENOPLE — The renovation of the Kaufman House has received more financial help with a second grant for the multi-million-dollar project that will reopen the building.

The office of Gov. Tom Wolf announced this week that the Kaufman House restoration project has received a $500,000 grant in addition to a grant for $780,000 that already had been awarded.

The grant will come through Butler County Redevelopment Authority, said spokesman Megan Augustine, and is part of the state’s push to support revitalization projects across Pennsylvania.

Bids for the renovation project were delayed Monday to allow more time for expected grants to be received and to give contractors more time to put together their final bids for the project, said Jack Cohen, president of Butler County Tourism Foundation.

The hotel and restaurant’s reopening, which is part of Zelienople’s borough revitalization project, is expected to happen in 2017.

The hotel portion of the project is expected to cost $2.3 million to $2.5 million, with 18 guest rooms to be restored. The hotel area has not been used since the 1970s.

The structure, built in 1902, was closed after a kitchen fire in 2011.

The renovated building also will provide culinary arts and hospitality management students from Butler County Community College with internship opportunities. Renovation work could begin this summer.
