PyroFest to be bigger than ever

Event planned for May 28, 29

WORTH TWP — The fifth annual PyroFest will take place at Cooper’s Lake on Memorial Day weekend.

The event, sponsored by fireworks company Pyrotecnico of New Castle, will be May 28 and 29.

This is the second year the event will be held at Cooper’s Lake. The festival has a five-year contract with the county tourism bureau to use the area.

“It’s 600 acres of open space. It gives them the ability to shoot off anything they want,” said tourism bureau President Jack Cohen. “In Butler County, that’s the only place that’s large enough.”

The space can hold between 50,000 and 60,000 spectators.

The event for the first time will feature four international headlining pyrotechnic companies. These techniques and products from around the globe create daytime and nighttime pyrotechnic displays.

“We are creating more than an event. We are building a phenomenon that people look forward to year to year,” said Stephen Vitale, president and CEO of Pyrotecnico.

The action will start May 28 with Vulcan and Ricardo Caballer Ricasa. Vulcan of Guangxi, China, will bring its show “Road Trip Ramble,” an extravaganza that took bronze at the 2015 L’International des Feux Loto in Montreal, Canada.

Ricardo Caballer Ricasa will follow Vulcan. The Spanish company supplies pyrotechnics products on five continents and is the provider of special effects fireworks to several theme parks, including Disney.

Sirius Pyrotechnics of Quebec, Canada, and Pyrotecnico will ignite the sky May 29. Sirius did the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Games.

The festival gates open at 3 p.m. for both days. The lineups can be found at pyrofest.com.

The event also will include a performance from the band Rusted Root, including a choreographed special effects production. Additionally, there will be other musical performances, a military salute, food vendors and a children’s area.

“It’s the largest fireworks show in the United States,” Cohen said. “It really is fun.”
